chauncey treat - dig
i finally got my hands on this song. i hear it once in a while on my new favourite radio station 101.9 (they tell you what song is playing while its playing on the website! i love that!) and every time it comes on i'm paralyzed by it. i brought my ipod shuffle out with me last night and when this song came on i sat there on the train and completely immersed myself in it...finally able to listen to the lyrics blasting in my ears and fell head over heels for this track. it's a break from all the electronic stuff i usually post and have been listening to mostly and that break is certainly welcome with songs like this. here's the track and lyrics...read along with the song...it's gorgeous! it's exactly how i feel right now!
enjoy!
incubus - dig
We all have a weakness
But some of ours are easy to identify. Look me in the eye,
and ask for forgiveness.
We'll make a pact to never speak that word again.
Yes, you are my friend.
We all have something that digs at us,
at least we dig each other.
So when weakness turns my ego up
I know you'll count on me from yesterday.
If I turn into another
dig me up from under what is covering
the better part of me.
Sing this song
remind me that we'll always have each other
when everything else is gone.
We all have a sickness
that cleverly attaches and multiplies
No matter how we try.
We all have someone that digs at us,
at least we dig each other.
So when sickness turns my ego up
I know you'll act as a clever medicine.
If I turn into another,
dig me up from under what is covering
The better part of me.
Sing this song!
Remind me that we'll always have each other
when everything else is gone.
Oh, each other when everything else is gone.
If I turn into another
dig me up from under what is covering
the better part of me.
Sing this song
remind me that we'll always have each other
when everything else is gone.
Oh, each other when everything else is gone.

what we do to survive...
(Tom Pilston/The Times)
Volunteer Kate Luntz canvasses for Barack Obama in Denver
Two women walk out of John McCain’s Mid-West headquarters carrying a pile of voter canvassing sheets, one sports a baseball hat declaring her a “team leader” of the Republican campaign. And both are black — an unusual sight in an election where Barack Obama’s support among African Americans is almost monolithic.
Are they volunteers? They look at each other sheepishly. “Not exactly,” replies one. “We work for an employment agency,” says the other. Who are they voting for? “I don’t want to say,” says the first woman. “Obama — of course!” whispers the braver of the pair.
They laugh, then look over their shoulders at the office behind them. “Don’t give him your name, he’ll put it in the paper,” says the cautious one, explaining that they cannot afford to lose their $10-an-hour (£6) jobs. “This is embarrassing. We’re doing this because we have to live. At least none of our friends can see us. We’re from Chicago — like Obama.”
Republicans have had to hire mercenaries for this ground war. And, if the experience outside the McCain headquarters was any guide, they may not all be shooting in the same direction.
Mr Obama, by comparison, has enough resources to spread his forces out like an invading army. In a dozen battlefield states, including Iowa, he has more than 700 offices, staffed with thousands of field organisers and hundreds of thousands of volunteers.
In the breadth of its ambition and attention to detail, the campaign of Mr Obama — he talks of it as a “movement” — may surpass a Republican grassroots organisation built for President Bush in 2004 that has since fallen into disrepair. The Democratic ground operation, together with a concerted effort to register millions of new voters, may swell support upwards of 3 per cent next week.
Mr Obama has recently expressed pride, even awe, at the power of his election machine. “We’ve been designing and we’ve been engineering and we’ve been at the drawing board and we’ve been tinkering,” he said. “Now it’s time to just take it for a drive. Let’s see how this baby runs.”
But for all the fine tuning it has received over the past year it is still stamped: “Made in Iowa”. This is where it all started for Mr Obama almost ten months ago when the discipline of his volunteers and a flood of younger voters propelled him to victory in the Democratic caucuses. On that same cold January night Mr McCain skidded into fourth place after a helter-skelter last-minute vote-chase.
And Iowa is where the contrast between the two campaigns is still the starkest. Mr Obama has 50 offices compared with 16 for Mr McCain — and four times the number of staff.
At the Obama outpost in Mason City, lights are still on at 10pm while youthful organisers plough through lists of the neighbourhood teams and precinct captains. The walls are decorated with idealistic amateur art depicting Mr Obama alongside peace signs and the mantra of the 280-page Obama campaign field manual: “Respect, empower, include”. The floors are littered with the detritus of elections: half-eaten food, a Hallowe’en pumpkin, a notice showing that a refrigerator and a toaster have been received on loan.
Among the volunteers in this office is Suren Pandita, a Labour Party worker from Croydon. “The big difference is just the sheer intensity,” he says. “Here we will have teams of five or six people for every single precinct and they will work each house where we’ve identified supporters until we’re sure they have voted. Almost every day is like election day.”
Volunteers are given a four-page script setting out their “persuasion rap”, additional talking points and exhortations to make people cast ballots early — a particular obsession for this campaign. So far, only 29 per cent of early voters in Iowa have been registered Republicans.
Canvass sheets ran to four pages and are filled in with painstaking detail, assessing all voters on a scale of 1, firm supporters, to 5, which means they have pledged allegiance to Mr McCain. Time and again they return to newly registered people, as well as those wavering at “2”, “3” and “4”, to squeeze out one drop, one more vote from Iowa.
The information is sent to the campaign’s Chicago headquarters, mixed with consumer data about individual voters, then barcoded. Fresh lists are then sent to campaign offices with stringent targets for voter contact. Mr Obama’s campaign manager, David Plouffe, has issued a characteristically precise demand for 845,252 volunteer shifts to be filled in battleground states before polling day.
Inside the McCain offices in the Des Moines suburbs of Urbandale there are huge posters of Ronald Reagan and Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing radio host, but little of the excitement or appliance-of-science of the Obama campaign.
Canvassing sheets are simple one-page affairs. A large sign at the entrance shows that it is halfway towards a recruiting target of 590 volunteers for the election.
Not all of those working for it were hired hands. Shannon Weyant, 31, explained that she had been inspired by Sarah Palin to get involved. “She’s my hero,” she says. How much work does she do for the campaign? “Maybe a couple of hours a week. I fit it in when I can,” she replies before rushing off to pick up one of her five children from school.
The Republicans, who won Iowa four years ago, have not given up yet. Mrs Palin was here for two rallies on Saturday and Mr McCain visited yesterday for the fourth time in just over a month. His strategists point out that elections are not won by how many offices you open or the length of your canvassing script. Some suggest that a system that worked for Mr Obama in caucuses — where a small increase in turnout can have a disproportionate effect — may not count for so much in a general election.
But others wonder why Iowa is getting so much attention from Mr McCain when he trails in the Hawkeye state polls by double-digit margins.
“Maybe they know something we don’t,” says Eric Woolson, who guided Mike Huckabee to victory in the Iowa Republican caucuses ten months ago. “But in a year when we really needed to step up, we have failed to match the strides being made by our opponent.”
He admits to being surprised, if not hurt, that no one asked him to advise the McCain team in Iowa. Instead he is devoting some of the final days before the election to research a business venture for selling catnip.
Clear plastic bags containing the pungent green herb fill a corner of his office. “It looks like marijuana,” he says apologetically. “I’m working on getting exactly the right blend.”
plot to kill obama thwarted!
WASHINGTON – Two white supremacists allegedly plotted to go on a national killing spree, shooting and decapitating black people and ultimately targeting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, federal authorities said Monday.
In all, the two men whom officials describe as neo-Nazi skinheads planned to kill 88 people — 14 by beheading, according to documents unsealed in U.S. District Court in Jackson, Tenn. The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.
The spree, which initially targeted an unidentified predominantly African-American school, was to end with the two men driving toward Obama, "shooting at him from the windows," the court documents show.
"Both individuals stated they would dress in all white tuxedos and wear top hats during the assassination attempt," the court complaint states. "Both individuals further stated they knew they would and were willing to die during this attempt."
An Obama spokeswoman traveling with the senator in Pennsylvania had no immediate comment.
Sheriffs' deputies in Crockett County, Tenn., arrested the two suspects — Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tenn., and Paul Schlesselman 18, of Helena-West Helena, Ark. — Oct. 22 on unspecified charges. "Once we arrested the defendants and suspected they had violated federal law, we immediately contacted federal authorities," said Crockett County Sheriff Troy Klyce.
The two were charged by federal authorities Monday with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms from a federally licensed gun dealer, and threatening a candidate for president.
Cowart and Schlesselman are being held without bond. Agents seized a rifle, a sawed-off shotgun and three pistols from the men when they were arrested. Authorities alleged the two men were preparing to break into a gun shop to steal more.
Attorney Joe Byrd, who has been hired to represent Cowart, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday. Messages left on two phone numbers listed under Cowart's name were not immediately returned.
No telephone number for Schlesselman in Helena-West Helena could be found immediately.
The court documents say the two men met about a month ago on the Internet and found common ground in their shared "white power" and "skinhead" philosophy.
The numbers 14 and 88 are symbols in skinhead culture, referring to a 14-word phrase attributed to an imprisoned white supremacist: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children" and to the eighth letter of the alphabet, H. Two "8"s or "H"s stand for "Heil Hitler."
Court records say Cowart and Schlesselman also bought nylon rope and ski masks to use in a robbery or home invasion to fund their spree, during which they allegedly planned to go from state to state and kill people. Agents said the skinheads did not identify the African-American school they were targeting by name.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the Nashville field office for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives, said authorities took the threats very seriously.
"They said that would be their last, final act — that they would attempt to kill Sen. Obama," Cavanaugh said. "They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying."
He added: "They seemed determined to do it. Even if they were just to try it, it would be a trail of tears around the South."
The investigation is continuing, and more charges are possible, Cavanaugh said. He said there's no evidence — so far — that others were willing to assist Cowart and Schlesselman with the plot.
At this point, there does not appear to be any formal assassination plan, Secret Service spokesman Eric Zahren said.
"Whether or not they had the capability or the wherewithal to carry out an attack remains to be seen," he said.
Zahren said the statements about the assassination came out in interviews after the men were arrested last week.
The Secret Service became involved in the investigation once it was clear that an Obama assassination attempt was part of this violent far-reaching plot.
"We don't discount anything," Zahren said, adding that it's one thing for the defendants to make statements, but it's not the same as having an organized assassination plan.
Helena-West Helena, on the Mississippi River in east Arkansas' Delta, is in one of the nation's poorest regions, trailing even parts of Appalachia in its standard of living. Police Chief Fred Fielder said he had never heard of Schlesselman.
However, the reported threat of attacking a school filled with black students worried Fielder. Helena-West Helena, with a population of 12,200, is 66 percent black. "Predominantly black school, take your pick," he said.

original poetry - 'sandcastle'
why do i always need a deadline
in order to rush and deliver?
why can't i perfect my emissions
on my own volition?
why do we have to break down and crumble
like an abandoned sandcastle?
overcome by the high tide of a thunderstorm
swallowed and deformed
the moment so nihilistic and fleeting
a notion so far from rarity
my irreverance has garnered me notoriety
my mental fashions have inspired my celebrity
but yet they still feel so hollow
my adventures still feel so empty
why do we do the things we do?
everything is just another gesture
to eventually construct an imperfect kingdom
to enjoy a most temporary rule
taken away after a mistaken political maneuver
i have been working hard on the inside
for so long i have denied myself
the reconstruction of my visage
the preservation of my would be grand facade
perhaps that is the missing component
to finally reach what i think is unreachable
happiness constant yet changing
with each twist and turn of my body
each extension of my limbs
each breath that invades my chest
each drop of bloog that boils me alive
palin gets drilled!!

a positive article about madonna?
From the Vancouver news website Straight.com:
Why Madonna still matters
By Mike Usinger
A quarter-century into a career that shows no signs of waning, she has earned a place in pop history
Once he gets over the stinging reality that his days of rogering one of the most famous women on the planet are officially over, Guy Ritchie will come to realize that he's truly a blessed man. Forgive him if he's unable to see that now. After all, there've been definite perks to spending the past eight years as Mr. Madonna Louise Ciccone.
On a completely superficial level, there's the fact that Ritchie's soon-to-be-ex-wife—improbably, and against all known laws of nature—is hotter at 50 than she was in her 20s, and only partly because she no longer dresses like something Keith Richards's cat dragged in. Let's not overlook that Ms. Ciccone has amassed the kind of personal fortune—an estimated $600 million and counting—that Heather Mills would happily switch teams for a piece of. And there's no disputing that Madonna seems like the kind of wife who's willing to go the extra distance for her man. Hell, she not only abandoned America for life in Ye Jolly Olde English Countryside with Ritchie, she actually started talking like someone who shits strawberries and clotted cream.
So why is the 40-year-old filmmaker better off in the wake of the recent announcement that he and Madonna are finally splitsville? That one's easy: he'll no longer have the nagging conviction that, compared to what his far-beyond-driven wife has accomplished, he's a complete and abject failure.
If her quarter-century reign has taught us anything, it's that Madonna is obviously not human, and not just because she's reportedly banned everyone on her current Sticky and Sweet tour from making eye contact with her. Three decades into an already astonishing career, she remains pop culture's most savvy chameleon, successfully reinventing herself with a regularity that David Bowie and that toad from U2 can only dream of. Trying to compete with such a one-woman force of nature is futile. During their time together, Ritchie has watched Madonna continue to pile up the hits, striking late-period platinum (hello, "Hung Up") while making a convincing case that not all 47-year-old women need to be forcibly separated from their unitards. Through it all, he's been best known as that English guy who once had a hit with 2000's Snatch. Somewhere, a permanently-stuck-on-diaper-duty Gavin Rossdale feels his pain.
What makes Madonna seem like she's not of this Earth is that right from the point she sashayed onto MTV with "Lucky Star" 25 years ago, she's never once coasted, never once become irrelevant. That's made her one of pop music's rarest of creatures. As sure as Cyndi Lauper, Tiffany, and that flatulent white-trash lunatic from Louisiana wake up each morning to wonder what could have been, Madonna has not only taken her place among giants, she's in many ways outshined them. Because she doesn't have a penis, she rarely gets credit for that.
But think about it. As if keeling over on the crapper wasn't enough of an indignity, Elvis Presley had blown his creative wad five years into his run, which is why he's today remembered as much as a bloated Vegas-buffet horror show as for once being the most fuckable man in '50s America. The Beatles were done seven years after a generation of screaming teens first soiled themselves at The Ed Sullivan Show, and the Stones have been a glorified cover band since 1981's Tattoo You, the last record that even Mick Jagger will publicly admit to owning.
Madonna, on the other hand, not-so-quietly became the best-selling female rock artist of the 20th century, all the while displaying a Teflon-like ability to weather pop music's never-ending string of palace revolutions. Displaying an endurance that would impress a Brooklyn cockroach, she's not only managed to survive new wave, hair metal, new country, grunge, alternative rock, teen pop, techno, rap rock, hip-hop, nu metal, rawk, screamo, emo, and indie rock, but she's done so without ever once having to sink to a '68 Comeback Special. Chalk that up partly to her understanding that nothing sells like sex, music videos, and music videos that bring the sex; incredible as it might seem today in an America where Riveted Rectums passes as a couples' flick, there was a time when the sight of a pop star grabbing her crotch ("Express Yourself"), whoring around in a wedding dress ("Like a Virgin"), and brandishing a whip in bring-out-the-Gimp bondage gear ("Human Nature") was actually boundary-breaking.
Doubly laudable is that Madonna has actually gotten more interesting as her career has progressed. As much as "Material Girl", "Papa Don't Preach", and "Into the Groove" are all guaranteed to get liquored-up geriatrics stampeding for the dance floor at white weddings, the truth is that they sound a little dated today. If Madonna's vocal limitations are never going to make anyone forget Aretha Franklin—or, for that matter, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, or that neon-haired midget from Paramore—no one can knock the phaser-strafed brilliance of "Ray of Light". Or the tower-of-power soul workout "Express Yourself". Or the acoustic glitch-pop majesty of "I Deserve It".
So fuck Guy Ritchie, who, if the tabloid rumblings are to be believed, liked to tell anyone who would listen that his wife couldn't act and that she looked like a grandmother on-stage compared to her backup dancers. When's the last time he debuted at number one three decades into a career where the average lifespan is two albums, a feat Madonna pulled off with this year's Hard Candy? Or strapped on a corn silo–inspired bra without looking more ridiculous than Marilyn Manson during his man-eunuch Mechanical Animals phase? Or somehow managed to make Timbaland sound like he might occasionally know what he's doing?
And on the off chance that Ritchie still needs proof that his former better half is indeed a force of nature, remember this: in the spring of 1985, Madonna made headlines for a nude photo shoot she'd done while broke and starving in New York. Considering that Al Gore hadn't yet invented the Internet, a bidding war, predictably, broke out among girlie-magazine magnates Hugh Hefner and Bob Guccione. In July of that year, Madonna made history. Despite looking like she had a dead polecat Velcroed to her crotch, she got men buying both Penthouse and Playboy for something other than the articles. Some guys truly don't know what they've got till it's gone.

there's 'pain' in 'palin'
Old conventional political wisdom dictates that vice presidential picks don't change the outcome of a race. When Sarah Palin received larger fanfare than John McCain a month ago, the pundits cautioned, "people vote for President, not for Vice President."
Well, vice presidential candidates may not win elections, but this year it's looking increasingly likely that Sarah Palin may help lose one.
In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released last night, the number one concern about McCain was Palin's perceived lack of qualifications.
Today Show/NBC News graphic
This morning, NBC's Political Director Chuck Todd explained McCain's "Palin problem":
"Speaking of Palin, her numbers have plummeted in our poll. For the first time, she has a net-negative fav/unfav rating (38%-47%), the only principal [candidate] to carry that distinction. What's more, 55% think she's unqualified to serve as president if the need arises, which is a troublesome number given McCain's age. (Have worries about McCain's age risen because of Palin? Seems to be the case)."
Other polls reflect this perception problem for the McCain/Palin camp as well. Pew released its latest poll that echoes many of the NBC/WSJ's findings about voters' perceptions of Palin and their effect on McCain. Pew's headline doesn't mention Palin specifically -- "Growing Doubts About McCain's Judgment, Age and Campaign Conduct" -- but it has this telling observation in the write-up:
"Notably, opinions of Palin have a greater impact on voting intentions than do opinions of Joe Biden, Obama's running mate."
Then ABC pulls McCain's poll problems together with this nugget explaining its most recent poll: "Fallout continues from McCain's pick of Sarah Palin for vice president, with 52 percent saying it weakens their confidence in his judgment."
Obviously, the McCain people aren't loving this and Politico reports that the candidate himself says he's "amazed" by the reaction to his VP pick. Politico writes:
"She is a governor, the most popular governor in America," McCain said. "I think she is the most qualified of any that has run recently for vice president."
"I'm amazed. I'm amazed. Which is better? Serve 35 years in the United States SenateIraq into three different countries, or be governor of a state and a reformer and give people their tax dollars back and bring about reform in the way that your state does business? Which is better?" and say you've got to divide

into the keith haring groove!
wow! so excited that this leaked! it's the backdrop video of 'into the groove' from madonna's sticky and sweet tour. it's a gorgeous clusterfuck of classic 80's dance songs mixed with 'into the groove' laid over 'toop toop' by cassius! this show has definitely been dubbed 'the mash up tour' and rightfully so. the editing is joyously fantastic and really evokes the spirit of that decade and is a true homage to madonna's dear friend keith haring who passes away almost 20 years ago!

Obama revels in Powell endorsement and cash mountain
FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina (AFP) — Barack Obama profited Sunday from the coveted backing of former secretary of state Colin Powell and a jaw-dropping cash haul entering into the final fortnight of the epic White House race.
The Republican Powell, the first African-American to serve at the apex of the US military as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the 47-year-old Democrat would be a "transformational president."
Powell carries the burden of his role in promoting the Iraq invasion. But his endorsement was still a stinging rebuff to Republican candidate John McCain, 72, and could help sway swing voters and military veterans.
His backing came as the Obama campaign announced a fundraising take of more than 150 million dollars last month, demolishing its previous record of 66 million set in August.
The gigantic treasure trove is enabling Obama, who enjoyed a 10-point lead in Sunday's Gallup tracking poll, to hit McCain even harder with a nationwide advertising blitz before the November 4 election.
Addressing a carnival-like rally of more than 10,000 supporters here, Obama said he was "beyond honored and deeply humbled to have the support of General Colin Powell."
The Illinois senator said the Fayetteville area of North Carolina, home to the giant Fort Bragg army base, knew something about military heroism.
"And this morning, a great soldier, a great statesman, a great American has endorsed our campaign to change America," he said.
"And he knows, as we do, that this is a moment where we all need to come together as one nation -- young and old, rich and poor, black, white, Hispanic, native American, Republican and Democrat."
Powell, on NBC program "Meet the Press," said Obama had "met the standard" to be commander-in-chief "because of his ability to inspire" all ages, ethnic groups and political persuasions.
McCain remained a friend, Powell said while launching a hard-hitting critique of the Republican's rightward lurch, his haphazard response to the US economic crisis and his choice of Sarah Palin as vice presidential nominee.
Powell said that Obama, in contrast, had emerged looking presidential with a "steadiness, an intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge" in his approach to the financial tumult.
The nation's first black secretary of state added that victory by the mixed-race Obama in two weeks would make all Americans "proud," not just African-Americans, and would "electrify the world."
Speaking on Fox News Sunday, McCain said he had "always admired and respected General Powell."
"We're long-time friends. This doesn't come as a surprise," the Arizona senator said, touting his endorsement by other former secretaries of state including Henry Kissinger, James Baker and Lawrence Eagleburger.
McCain also defended automated "robo-calls" unleashed by his campaign in at least 10 swing states, insisting charges that Obama is a closet radical who would subvert democracy were "legitimate and truthful."
The tenor of McCain's campaign, whose robo-calls also accuse Obama of supporting the killing of babies born alive in abortions, was bitterly decried by Powell along with anti-Muslim discrimination in Republican circles.
Obama said the campaign would "probably get uglier" as it climaxes but stressed his own focus on issues such as the economy and Iraq and said: "We've got to have a line that we don't cross."
McCain renewed his condemnation of Obama's economic policies as "socialism." Obama said McCain backed tax cuts for wealthy corporate bosses "who've been making out like bandits."
Stopping by Fayetteville's "Cape Fear" barbecue restaurant, Obama was accosted by 54-year-old shop worker Diane Fanning, who yelled "socialist, socialist, socialist -- get out of here!"
Fanning refused to shake Obama's hand when he offered it, and she told reporters that Powell was a "RINO" -- Republican In Name Only.
Other customers were more welcoming of Obama as he foraged for votes in North Carolina, which last voted for a Democratic presidential hopeful in 1976 but which like other Republican "red" states is now very much in play.
Furniture salesman Mike Long, 33, said he had been less than 50 percent likely to vote for Obama. But after discussing health care with the candidate, he was now "98 percent" certain.
'that's so gay'
The Ad Council and GLSEN have teamed up for a campaign, ThinkB4YouSpeak, intended to educate young people about homophobic language and its consequences. To that end, they've enlisted Wanda Sykes and Hillary Duff to appear in two PSAs that draw attention to the phrase "that's so gay" and its interpretations.
The campaign will utilize print, internet, and radio, and television spots.
Watch Sykes and Duff hand it to some teens...
i like wanda's better than hillary's except for her little comment at the end haha
i'm also glad in a corny activist way that these commercials exist...things are changing more quickly than i expected.

Leave out the ageist sexist slander surrounding the Queen of Pop's divorce, please. Guy clearly just couldn't keep up

Keeping the beat going, forever.

It's inevitable that the Queen of Pop should eventually have to confront issues of age, decay and sexual redundancy. There comes a time to abandon embarrassing obsessions and admit that no amount of effort can convey an impression of youthful readiness. Yes, it's finally happened: Guy Ritchie has become too old to be Madonna's consort.
The divorce is confirmed and Ritchie is to be banished from the royal realm with £2.50, a packed lunch and a spare pair of socks. I'm surprised; I thought it was a logical match and that standard interpretations of the Madonna-Ritchie dynamic are transparently sexist. Madonna is vilified as a voracious castrator-succubus, preying upon once-talented males like Sean Penn and, er, Warren Beatty and Carlos Leon, leaving them spent and careerless. She's slandered as a monstrously butch alpha female whose incomprehensible success publicly emasculates her gamma male companions. Or else she is a once-relevant, once-tough wretch who's gone soft, becoming a country wife in masochistic thrall to a chauvinist.
"What does she see in him?" asked Madonna fans as the vows were exchanged at Skibo Castle eight years ago. I think she saw a man who likes intelligent women, as evidenced by Ritchie's own formidable mother. I think she saw a kind father to her children. What did Ritchie see in Madonna? Probably her talent, charisma, guts and brains. Maybe he couldn't keep up with her. After all, she's made of brushed titanium and fuelled by some dark matter that makes her impervious to the laws of space-time, physics and biology. When astronomers spy burnt planets and frazzled satellites scorching the cosmos, they know that these are power sources that Madonna has consumed for fuel, to keep the beat going.
It's amazing that the paucity of Ritchie's talent should be put down to Madonna's ruining of him. The sexist ageism against Madonna has been overwhelming ever since she appeared looking frankly amazing in a leotard in the Hung Up video in 2005. "Madonna falls onstage, does not break hip!" crowed the LA Times recently, referring to a moment when she lost her balance during her Sticky and Sweet tour. A commenter on the website sneered "Sit down old woman".
Does she care? Probably, but that won't stop her. Romances come and go, but Madonna is forever. She's a genius, a true artist, a polymath who's written some of the best pop songs in history. She deserves all of the acclaim and none of the insults. Think of Vogue, Live to Tell, La Isla Bonita, Oh Father and Hung Up. Think of the triumvirate of perfect albums, Like a Prayer, Ray of Light and Confessions. The street coolness of Desperately Seeking Susan. The video for Die Another Day. I'm Breathless on the Dick Tracy soundtrack. And the great twinsets in that clothing collection for H&M.
I reckon Madonna's next album will be her best ever. In the meantime, I hope Ritchie's lottery funding application for Snatch 2 works out.

Chicago may get 'gay-friendly' high school
By Mallory Simon
(CNN) -- Public school officials in Chicago, Illinois, are recommending approval of a "gay-friendly" high school because harassment and violence are causing gay students to skip class and drop out at alarming rates.
The School for Social Justice Pride Campus, which officials say will not be exclusive to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students, is aimed at being safe and welcoming for any student looking for another school option, said Josh Edelman, executive officer in the Chicago Public Schools' Office of New Schools.
"It is not going to be a 'gay high school,' but yes, in a way, it is meant to target kids who feel they have been victims of bullying for their sexual orientation or perceived orientation," Edelman said.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan announced his recommendation Wednesday. Officials said Pride Campus would be separate physically but be attached administratively to the School for Social Justice.
School officials said the standards and curriculum for the school would be in line with other schools in the district. The school would also offer counseling for students, though because of federal laws, officials cannot ask students about their sexual orientation. The curriculum would not rely on, but would incorporate lessons about, sexual identity inhistory and literature classes, officials said.
"It's about creating another option for kids," Edelman said. "When it comes down to it, though, it is all about having a choice and providing high-quality options for students, whether they are gay or not."
The school could be a lifeline for students who are struggling for academic success.

Gay and lesbian students are three times more likely to miss school because they feel unsafe, according to a 2003 Chicago Public School District survey. And a study released Wednesday by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network showed similar trends across the country. Is this the best solution? »
The national study, which the group says is the most comprehensive report ever on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students nationwide, found that 86.2 percent of those students reported being verbally harassed, 44.1 percent physically harassed and 22.1 percent physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation.
This harassment, the study concludes, has affected students' ability to achieve success in school, causing their grade-point level to be, on average, half a point lower than that of heterosexual students nationwide.
Dropout levels are higher among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students because of more frequent truancy, the study found. Almost 32 percent of those students missed a class because of feeling unsafe, compared with only 5.5 percent of heterosexual students nationwide, the study said.
Truancy and lower grades aren't the only repercussions of anti-gay sentiments in schools, said Kevin Jennings, the founder and executive director of GLSEN. He cited the killing of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student shot by a classmate in Oxnard, California, in February after King asked to be his valentine.
Jennings said the repercussions of harassment alone underscore the need for Pride Campus.
"If we keep doing nothing, we are going to keep getting these horrifying levels of harassment, greater rates of skipping, not going to college and more tragic violence like the murder of Lawrence King," he said. "Those are our choices. We can continue to do nothing, and we know the results, or we can save young people's lives and offer them an education and a future."
A similar school in New York, the Harvey Milk High School in the East Village, was created because of similar fears.
The school, which had been around since 1985, serving gay and lesbian students, expanded to a "gay-themed" school for 100 students in 2003. The Pride Campus is expected to serve 600 students, school officials said.
Harvey Milk High School, like the Pride Campus, is open to all students regardless of sexual orientation. But unlike the proposed school in Chicago, Harvey Milk requires its attendees to be at risk of dropping out because of harassment.
Harvey Milk boasts a graduation rate of 95 percent of its students -- all of whom were at risk of or had dropped out -- well above the city average of 52 percent.
When the school opened its doors, protesters, led by anti-gay Kansas minister Fred Phelps, screamed at supporters gathered outside to repent for their "sodomite behavior."
Edelman said that while some concerns have been raised about Pride Campus at community meetings, officials have not heard any large-scale opposition.
One Chicago resident said at a meeting that he could not support the school because of his religious beliefs, Edelman said. Others told local media they didn't support the use of public money to create the school. Some thought that if gay students went to the Pride Campus, students in other schools would not learn to accept the gay community. Instead, they suggested, the focus should be working toward acceptance in all schools.
"Absolutely, we should work for [acceptance] across the board," said Jennings, the GLSEN executive director. "But it's not going to change overnight, and in the meantime, these kids aren't going to graduate."
Jennings said that GLSEN research shows acceptance among peers is helped by having a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender support group at school.
The most important factor, according to the GLSEN study, is the existence of a state law that protects students from harassment based on their sexual orientation.
Thirty-nine states, including Illinois and New York, do not have laws offering that specific protection, Jennings said citing the GLSEN study. Some have laws, but they don't specify on what basis the protections apply, which Jennings said was essentially as effective as having no law at all. California, Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin are the only states with specific sexual orientation protections for students.
The Chicago School Board will vote October 22 to approve the School for Social Justice Pride Campus in addition to 17 other proposed schools.
As far as Jennings is concerned, the school board's choice is an easy one.
"The choice they are making is not should we have this kind of school," he said. "The question is 'Are we going to do anything we can to get these kids an education?' And there's only one right answer -- yes."
